Join us for a magical lantern parade along the Hobart waterfront, to celebrate the midwinter solstice and the return of the sun.
The solstice is the longest night of the year in Antarctica, a time of deep cold and darkness, but it also marks the turn of the season. Gradually, the light will grow and the days lengthen as spring comes to the loneliest place on earth. The snow petrels and their friends, the penguins and the albatrosses, signal the advent of the southern summer.
Children from several Hobart schools will carry beautiful hand-made lanterns accompanied by a lively and colourful band of musicians and dancers to banish the winter cold and dark.
